Privacy Policy — Chrome Extension

Last updated: March 12, 2026

1. Overview

Marko ("we", "our", "us") is a professional bookmark manager available as a web application and a Chrome browser extension. This Privacy Policy describes how we handle information when you use the Marko Chrome Extension and the Marko web app at marko-bookmarks.app.

Short version: Marko stores only what is strictly necessary to provide bookmark synchronisation. We never sell your data, never track your browsing history, and never share your information with advertisers.

2. Data We Collect

We collect and store only the following information:

  • Account data — your email address and display name, provided when you create an account via Google Sign-In or email/password authentication.
  • Bookmark data — URLs, page titles, tags, categories, notes, and favicon URLs that you explicitly save through the extension or the web app.
  • Extension usage history — a local, on-device list of recently saved bookmarks used to display a history panel inside the extension popup. This data is stored only in chrome.storage.local on your device and is never transmitted to our servers.
  • Subscription data — your subscription plan status (free / trial / paid) managed through Stripe. We do not store full payment card details; these are handled exclusively by Stripe.

3. What We Don't Collect

Marko does not:

  • Track your browsing history or monitor which websites you visit.
  • Collect any data from pages you visit unless you explicitly trigger a save action.
  • Use cookies for advertising or cross-site tracking.
  • Sell, rent, or share your personal data with third-party advertisers.
  • Access the content of web pages beyond reading the title and URL at the moment of saving.

4. How We Use Your Data

Data is used exclusively to:

  • Authenticate your account and synchronise your bookmarks across devices.
  • Display and organise your saved bookmarks in the web app and extension.
  • Manage your subscription and enforce plan limits.
  • Send transactional emails (account confirmation, password reset). We send no marketing emails unless you explicitly opt in.

5. Data Storage

Your account and bookmark data is stored in Google Firebase Firestore, hosted in the United States. Firebase is a Google Cloud service governed by Google's data processing terms and ISO 27001-certified infrastructure.

Extension history data is stored locally in chrome.storage.local on your device and is cleared when you uninstall the extension or use the "Clear history" button in the extension popup.

All data in transit between your browser and our servers is encrypted via HTTPS/TLS.

6. Third-Party Services

Marko uses the following third-party services:

  • Google Firebase (Authentication, Firestore, Hosting) — stores and synchronises your bookmark data. Firebase Privacy Policy
  • Stripe — processes subscription payments. Marko never sees or stores your full card number. Stripe Privacy Policy
  • Icon Horse — used to fetch favicon images for saved bookmarks. Only the domain of a saved URL is shared with this service.

No other third parties receive your personal data.

7. Chrome Extension Permissions

The Marko Chrome extension requests the following permissions:

  • activeTab — reads the URL and title of the current tab only when you click the extension icon or trigger a save. No background tab monitoring occurs.
  • storage — saves your recent history locally on your device via chrome.storage.local.
  • bookmarks — (optional import feature) reads your existing Chrome bookmarks if you explicitly choose to import them into Marko.
  • identity — facilitates Google Sign-In within the extension popup.

The extension cannot read page content, inject scripts into pages, or operate in the background without user interaction.

8. Data Retention & Deletion

Your data is retained for as long as your account is active. You may delete your account and all associated bookmark data at any time from the Settings → Account panel in the Marko web app. Deletion is permanent and cannot be undone.

Local extension history can be cleared at any time using the "Clear history" button in the extension popup, or is automatically removed upon uninstalling the extension.

9. Children's Privacy

Marko is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

10. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be communicated via an in-app notice. Continued use of Marko after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
